Simple measures like adjusting the thermostat can help you save on office expenses.

Following are a few general tips to help you save money in the operation of your home office.

    • Record all of your office expenses for a month to find out what you're spending and where the money is going. When you look back over a months expenses -- being careful not to overlook any business related expenses -- you'll likely be able to identify several areas in which to cut back.

    • Investigate some of the software packages designed to help you track expenses and pay bills. Many are available at your local computer and software stores.

    • Consider joining a purchasing alliance for small businesses. You can get good discounts on everything from office supplies to health insurance.

    • Rather than buying several separate pieces of office equipment, consider buying a multi-function machine that can print, copy, fax and scan.

    • Review insurance costs with your agent and look for ways to cut premiums. For example, there may be ways to add options to your existing homeowner's policy at a much lower cost than a standard business liability policy.

    • Turn off non-essential equipment at night. Close off vents and adjust the thermostat when you're able to help save on heating and air-conditioning costs.
