Many newer models offer browsers that allow you to check email and Web-based information such as weather reports and stock quotes in abbreviated form.

As a home-based professional, you won't be in your home office all the time. There will be times when you're in your car, attending meetings or on business-related errands. To keep up an image of professionalism, and for important contacts, you'll still want to be reachable even when you're not in the office. Cellular phones are the ideal way to accomplish that, and they are now more popular than ever. They're also sleeker, lighter, more portable and (given what they offer) less expensive than ever. Here are some steps to help you choose the right cell phone for you:

    • Think about how you are going to be using the cell phone. Estimate how many calls per week you will make as well as how many minutes of calling time you're likely to need.

    • Make a budget for the purchase of the phone itself and for how much you are willing to spend per month on a service plan.

    • Decide what features you need on your phone and what other attributes appeal to you. These may include size, style, phone-book storage, voice messaging, customized settings (like differentiated rings, volume control, vibrating alert, etc.) fax/Internet capabilities and caller i.d. Make sure you get only what you need. More features invariably mean higher costs, both at the outset and in monthly payments.

    • Take a look at cell phone accessories. You'ill need an AC adapter for charging the phone. You mayalso want a car adapter, carrying case, or changable faceplates. If you need to make business calls while driving, it's a good idea to look into hands-free accessories like an ear piece or a speakerphone mount for your car.

    • Do some research online and read reviews of cell phones in consumer and electronics magazines. It also helps to pay a visit to your local phone or electronic retail store to compare options and prices.

    • When you have decided on a cell phone, make sure that you also pick a service plan at the same time. Many service providers will offer you a free phone or a good deal if you sign up for their plan. Be aware that some plans require the use of specific phones. Also remember if you are going to be traveling around the country, get a service plan that has good coverage nationwide. If you are going to be using it locally then look for a plan in your digital area.
