    Modular office furniture

Whether your home has a built-in study that functions as your office, or you've opted to convert a spare bedroom, with a little forethought the office's appearance can be integrated with the home's existing decor to create a functional space that is also aesthetically pleasing.

When planning how to decorate and accessorize your office, take the following into consideration:

    1. Style of decor in your home. Is your house decorated in a traditional, contemporary or offbeat style? Does it contain antique furnishings? Consider what is visible in the sight-line from one room to the next to ensure a pleasing transition.

    2. Wood tones. If you're selecting a wooden desk and other wooden furniture, try to match it with other wood tones in your home. Does your home feature dark, warm tones or lighter ones? Select office furniture with a wood finish that matches those tones as well as the style of your existing decor.

    3. Wall colors and other color schemes. Stay within the same color palette when selecting wall decor, framed prints (figure A) and desk accessories.

    4. Personalized space. Being careful not to clutter your work space, personalize your home office with a few family or personal items such as photographs or decorative objects. These items will help to brighten up the space and make it more visually interesting.

    5. Transplanted objects. To help integrate the look of your office with the rest of the home, consider looking around your home for objects -- such as lamps, plants or small furnishings -- that might be borrowed or moved from other rooms for use in the office (figure B).

    6. Facilitate organization and functionality. Select furnishings to help you work better and stay organized, avoiding obtrusive objects that serve little purpose.
