Now that the concrete pad has been poured and cured, the DIY crew starts building the Straffords' new storage shed. - Begin by building a header from 2 x 8s and plywood. Cut the plywood to size, and then place it between the 2 x 8s.
- Remove the siding from the house where the shed will attach (figure A).
- Cut the sill plates, and drill a hole in each one. Then slip the plates over the anchor.
- Use locking nuts to secure the sill plates to the anchor.
- Nail the studs to the header.
- Raise the front wall onto the sill plate, making sure its plumb.
- Brace the wall by attaching a 2 x 4 to the wall and the house (figure B).
- Toenail the wall onto the sill plate.
- Mark the side walls and the top plate for the studs to be installed. The studs will be placed every sixteen inches on center.
- Construct the side walls and install the last two studs onto the house.
- Raise the side walls into place, and attach them to the studs that are on the house and corners of the front wall.
- Toenail the studs of the side walls onto the sill plate.
- Install a double plate on the top of the wall to tie everything together.
- Snap a level chalk line on the side of the house, and then install the ledger board.
- Run a 2 x 4 from the ledger board to the top plate, to get angle measurements for the rafters (figure C).
- Cut out the angles for each rafter, and then nail them to the ledger board at the top plate.
- Attach support blocks between the rafters, and at the top plate.
- Install 4 x 8 sheets of 1/2" plywood up the sides of the shed structure, and the rafters.
- Attach nailing blocks to the ends of the rafters to support the fascia and soffit.
- Install a rake board to each side wall.
- Attach roofing felt up the side sheathing (figure D), and over the roof sheathing.
- Install shingles, doubling up on the first row.
- Install flashing at the corner, where the roof meets the house.
- Install inside and outside corner strips for the siding, and then install a starter strip at the bottom between the corner pieces.
- Cut the siding to fit between the corner pieces. Note: the first piece of siding should be snug up to the bottom of the starter strip, and between the corner strips. Subsequent pieces should snug up the top strips of the siding below. Make sure each row of siding is even with the siding on the house.
- Install a peg board and shelves inside the shed.
- Install a pre-hung door (figure E). Caulk and shim the frame.
- Place roofing felt and siding up the front of the shed.
