The Straffords need a space where they can keep their books and a place to study as they both continue medical education. The Homefront crew plans to convert an unused bedroom into a new home office and study space. Creating an alcove - Remove closet door, then turn off electricity at the breaker.
- Use wire nuts to cap off wiring.
- Cut the caulk around the door casing, and then remove the casing and door jam.
- Take out the support boards for the clothes rod.
- Saw an outline through the drywall (figure A) in the portion of the wall to be removed, then demolish the wall.
- Build a header and install it (figure B) over the jack studs (or king studs) for added support.
- Clear the entrance to the alcove by cutting off any sole plate remaining.
- Frame in a sidewall using two-by-fours, and then attach the two-by-fours to a new wall plate.
- Install drywall, nailing it in place with drywall screws.
- Run wiring from the attic into the new wall, then attach electrical boxes to the studs of the new wall. Run the new wiring in place.
- Cut out holes in the drywall for the electrical boxes.
- Attach the drywall to the studs with drywall screws.
- Hang trim around the edges of the alcove using brad nails to connect each piece.
- Shim the trim so that it's level and plumb in the alcove opening.
- Trim out the alcove opening with door casing.
- Repair any nail holes or damage inside the alcove using drywall mud.
- Caulk each seam where the casing meets the drywall, and then paint.
- Attach a wall cleat to the studs inside the alcove to hang modular shelves.
- Hang shelves.
