Installing a new countertop for the Jarrell family will make a nice improvement in the look of their kitchen. The Help on the Homefront crew gets to work taking out the old and putting in the new.

    1. After taking out the old countertop, lay the new one on top of the old and pencil in measurements, using the old countertop as a template (figure A).

    2. Drill starter holes with a spade bit at the corners of the sink outline.

    3. To finish cutting out the sink opening, use a jig saw.

    4. After all cuts are made to the new countertop, set it into place.

    5. Add matching colored caulk to the seams, tighten together with take-up miter bolts, then wipe away excess caulk with a damp cloth (figure B).

    6. To finish the project, secure the countertop with wood screws.

The convenience of a dishwasher is just one way that the Jarrells can create more family time, as well as improving the kitchen's overall efficiency.

    • "Dress" the new dishwasher (figure C) before installation. Add a 90-degree connector to the water supply fitting, and tighten it with a wrench.

    • If you are installing or have a disposal, remove the safety plug (figure D ), and tighten down the drain line hose with a hose clamp, using slip joint pliers.

    • Run the water supply line to the fitting and tighten down.
