Staff Sergeant Malaya Jarrell has been dreaming about a kitchen improvement for years. Recently deployed to serve her country in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Jarell dutifully left husband James and their three kids, James Jr., Sivantha and Katarena -- who await her return.

James Jarrell is busy working full-time and fulfilling the role of both Mom and Dad. He simply doesn't have a free moment to take on this project himself.

The Help on the Homefront crew has a surprise in store when Jarrell comes home!

Kitchen Improvement: Installing a Microwave Hood

Microwaves are a huge help in the kitchen, especially for a family that needs to fix a meal quickly. The Help on the Homefront crew replaces the existing microwave and installs a microwave/hood unit (figure A) to give the Jarrell family more countertop space.

    1. Organize tools to have everything at hand and ultimately save time on the installation. Then, using the manufacturer's template, mark and drill holes on the underside of the cabinet for the microwave plate installation. Tip: Tape template to the area were you are installing the hood for easier marking of holes (figure B).

    2. To cut out the opening for the ventilation duct, use a hole saw to cut the dry wall, then use a jig saw on the underside of the cabinet.

    3. Next, cut a hole in ceiling above the cabinet to run the hood exhaust duct through the attic space.

    4. Making sure the plug is out of the way, lock the unit into place and tighten down the hose clamp with a screwdriver. Then, plug the unit into the outlet.

    5. Next, you will need to attach the hood exhaust to the microwave exhaust by tightening the hose clamp with a screwdriver.

    6. Make a three-sided box that will serve decoratively hide the ductwork (figure C) by cutting out three pieces of plywood and painting them before installation.

    7. Put the plywood into place around the ductwork with finishing nails, then touch up paint.
