Scott Branscom and the Help on the Homefront crew work on Heather and Colin Hill's damaged window sill, and decide to install a cozy window seat with storage space. Materials: Carpenter knife or razor blade Pry bar (preferably flat) Pliers and hammer Prepainted pine board Saw Ruler Level White caulk Piano hinges 2 x 4 ledger board and cross board White melamine 2-1/2" wood screws 3/4" round trim Iron Melamine trim - To remove old window sills, first cut caulk that seals the window seal and any surrounding trim.
- Next, use a flat prybar to pry the sill and trim away (figure A) from the window surround. Remove remaining nails.
- Cut prepainted pine boards to size of each sill. Position new sill (figure B) and nail into place (sill should be flush with window frame due to addition of window seat).
- Caulk around each sill to seal. Spread caulk evenly with finger.
- Forego the installation of new trim. The new window seat will cover that area. To begin the window seat installation, first install 2 x 4 ledger boards along the walls where the top of the seat will be positioned. Also install ledger boards at the floor level.
- Install 2 x 4 cross board between the fronts of the top ledger boards (figure C), angling as necessary for proper fit.
- Cut melamine for the front of the window seat and attached to frame with 2-1/2" wood screws.
- Cut melamine for the top of the window seat. Position the cut melamine, then measure and cut 3/4" round trim to line the top of the window seat along the wall.
- Nail trim to wall, and add caulk around trim.
- Determine where seat should lift for storage access, then remove top of seat. Measure and cut the opening.
- Use iron to apply heat and adhere melamine trim to exposed areas of melamine.
- Attach piano hinges to lift up portion of seat, as well as the main window seat.
- Position window seat on frame and seal with caulk.
- Secure seat portion into the frame from underneath to finish.
- Add pillows, a custom padded seat or other embellishment as desired.
