Good-quality hinges can be expensive, but they're worth it. Cheap hardware can ruin the appearance of an otherwise good-looking piece.

Piano hinges are used where especially strong fitting is required (figure A ). They come in a strip and must be cut with a hacksaw to the desired length.

Cabinet/broad hinges are basic, easy-to-install hinges that are easily concealed (figure B).

The butler-table hinge is used for mounting fold-down table flaps made with a rule joint (figure C). A drill press must be used to make an indentation in the wood before these hinges can be inserted.

The concealed cabinet hinge allows a door to be opened without colliding with a door butted next to it (figure D).

    Installing a Cabinet Hinge

It's not difficult to install a cabinet hinge. Here's how to proceed.

    Materials

    Hinge
    Wood stock
    Pencil
    Chisel
    Mallet
    Screwdriver
    Screws

    1. Mark the position and depth of the hinge on the wood (figure E) with a pencil.

    2. Use a chisel to make small cuts into the pencil marks (figure F).

    3. Dig a small indentation with the chisel and mallet (figure G).

    4. Remove debris from the indentation to ensure a smooth surface.

    5. Place the hinge above the indentation, and screw into place.
