This coffee table is made from hockey sticks cut to size and glued together in an alternating pattern.
    Materials and tools:

15 to 25 hockey sticks (promotional or standard)
    three 1x4x8 clear pine boards
    one 2x4x8 select grade board
    one 3/4" x 2' x 4' (1/4 sheet) medium-density fiberboard (MDF)
    table saw
    miter saw
    18-gauge nail gun
    1" or 2" nails
    drill
    1-1/4" wood screws
    2" wood screws
    wood glue
    wood putty
    sandpaper
    stain

    Cut list:

hockey sticks: 18 sticks cut to 40 inches from end of blade

    pine 1x4 (frame):
2 pieces, each 16" long with 45-degree cuts at both ends
2 pieces, each 36" long with 45-degree cuts at both ends
2 pieces, each 14-1/2" long, cut square at both ends

    Steps:

    1. Cut the 1x4 clear pine pieces to length, according to the cut list. Using the 16" and 36" pieces, build a rectangular frame. Use wood glue and 2" 18-gauge nails to fasten the pieces together.

    2. Space the two 14-1/2" support pieces evenly in the opening. Attach them using wood glue and 2" 18-gauge nails.

    3. Attach the 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 18 legs to the inside corners of the frame with wood glue and 2" wood screws. Keep the top of the legs flush to the top edge of the frame.

    4. Place the 17x37 tabletop base on the frame and center it. Nail it into the frame through the top using the 18-gauge nail gun and 2" nails.

    5. Fill nail holes with wood putty. Sand and stain the frame.

    6. Line up and glue the hockey sticks one by one. Alternate the sticks as you go: blade, cut end, blade, cut end, etc. The blades should be pointing upward. Use the nail gun to tack them as you go.

    * Note: Use enough hockey sticks to get a width of 18 inches.

    7. Center the new new hockey stick tabletop on the MDF base and then use 1-1/4" wood screws to attach it from underneath.
