    episode DWSP-211

It's easy to see why loft spaces are so popular with artists: lots of wide, open spaces and natural light. Karl Champley and Tina Gibson create a suburban "loft" in a garage room; they start by clearing out the junk and painting the walls, floors and ceiling.

    Preparing the Space

    PHOTO

Primer and paint will get this room ready for action.

    • Karl and Tina decided to paint the ceiling and walls in shades of white that will reflect and make the most of the room’s natural light. Wash down the surfaces to be painted with a wall cleaner such as trisodium phosphate (TSP) or TSP substitute. This will remove any grease or dirt and will "rough up" any glossy paint already on the walls so that new paint will adhere well. Wear latex gloves and work in a well-ventilated area when using TSP or TSP substitute.

Safety Alert: Wear safety glasses when cleaning or painting ceilings or above head level on walls to keep chemicals or paint from getting in your eyes.

    • Once the walls are cleaned and dry, prime and paint as desired.

    • Karl and Tina also painted the room’s floor. Clean and prime the surface as before, and make sure to choose a paint that’s designed for floor use. Work from a far corner of the floor toward the doorway to avoid getting painted into a corner.
