Host Samantha Gleisten uses cocktail umbrellas and a glass top to give an old dining table a new look and use as a coffee table.
Materials:salvaged dining table drink umbrellas large sheet of glass pink rigid insulation 1/4" plywood shims hammer pry bar circular saw clamps screw gun knife table saw
1. Using a circular saw, cut out all of the table supports, leaving the table in two sections with three sides and two legs each.2. Put the two tables sections together to form a smaller rectangular table. Measure the interior distance from leg-to-leg on the longer, joined sides. Cut two oak 1x3's to this length using a chop saw. 3. Glue, clamp and screw the oak boards to the inside walls, holding the two table sections tightly together (figure A). 4. Using a table saw, cut a piece of 1/4 inch plywood to the size of the inner rectangle (figure B). Cut notches for the corner legs using a circular saw. 5. Sand down and refinish the scratched up table. Make sure to stain the top part of the table as it will be seen through the glass top (figure C).
6. Using a knife, cut rigid pink insulation to the size of the interior of the table box, and then lay it in place.7. Stick cocktail umbrellas in the insulation using the different colors to make a pattern (figure D). 8. Make sure all the umbrellas are level and don't extend beyond the sides. Place a large rectangular sheet of glass on top to complete the table (figure E).
Project Cost:Glass top: $80 Umbrellas: $6 Table legs: Free Wood and insulation: $20 Total: $106
