In this segment, host Samantha Gleisten creates storage that looks like a tree--complete with realistic bark.
Materials:1/2" MDF tree branches pentagonal storage units paint
Treetops:1. Lay the storage unit down on the MDF. Draw out the main tree top shape (figure A) which will sit on top of the very back of the unit. 2. Cut out the design using a jigsaw (figure B).
3. Mark the perpendicular tree part, and then cut using a jigsaw. This piece should have a 90-degree corner and the bottom must not extend beyond the front of the unit.4. Mark and cut out two smaller treetop pieces with a 90-degree cutout in each using a jigsaw.
Tree Branches:1. Put the branches in clamps, and then screw the bark smooth. 2. With a razor blade, cut one inch of bark off the clipped end (figure C), and then round-off with a sander or angle grinder. 3. Screw the branch to the table overhanging the end, and then put a plastic drop cloth on the floor. 4. Paint the branch any color you choose, leaving the filed down ends bare. 5. Drill a hole in each side of the units to accommodate these branches using a paddle bit. Paint: 1. Prime and paint the MDF cutouts green. 2. Paint the storage units to simulate tree bark.
Reassemble:1. Glue and screw the MDF treetop pieces from under the storage unit. Screw into the side of the middle piece from behind the large back section. 2. Using wood glue, attach the tree branches to the pre-drilled holes (figure D). Project Cost: Cabinets: $60 MDF: $40 Branches: Free Paint and materials: $22 Total: $122
