With Remo's approval on the layout, Randall is ready to install the tiles. He trowels an even layer of thin-set on the underlayment, and then back-butters the tile (figure G) for better coverage. Once the tile is set, he uses a level to make sure the tile is flat and even. As he works, he places spacers between each corner (figure H). For tiles that run adjacent to the wall or around corners, Randall carefully measures the space, and then uses a diamond blade wet saw to cut each tile to size (figure I).
For tough cuts around the sink or sewer opening (figure J), Remo helps Randall transfer a group of measurements to low tack tape on the tile. Using tape gives Randal an exact line to follow, so there's less room for error. With the measurements plotted out, he is able to map out a precise curve (figure K). Randall uses the saw to make the initial cut, and then Remo helps him refine the edge with a grinder and a rubbing stone (figure L).
With the tiles installed, it's downhill from here as Randall finishes the final steps of grouting and caulking. If the grout joints are 1/8" or larger, Randall uses a sanded grout for strength. As the house settles and shifts, the grout acts as another buffer so the tiles don't crack over time. Randall cleans the tile surface, and then uses a rubber grout float to pack the grout in all the joints (figure M). Once he fills all the joints, Randall uses a wet sponge to clean off the excess grout (figure N). He wipes the joint as he uses a 45 degree angle so he doesn't remove the grout from between the tiles.
Once the grout dries, Randall caulks around the edges of the sink and along the walls (figure O). He reinstalls the toilet, and then cleans and buffs the tiles to complete the project (figure P).
With one tiling project under his belt, Randall's ready to jump into the next projectinstalling a granite kitchen counter top.Next Weekend Project: Faucet Installation and Repair Weekend Project Index
