Expert Bruce Johnson is on hand to show you how to create a faux inlay design on your hardwood floor. It’s a great project to do and a way to dress up your hardwood floors without going to a lot of expense.

    Materials:

    Polyurethane
    Ruler
    Painter's tape
    Razor
    Sea sponge
    Water-based stain
    Stencil

    Faux-Finished Floor

    1. Make sure there is a coat of polyurethane on the floor. It also needs to be cleaned with mineral spirits.

    2. Use a ruler and painter’s tape to lay out the border (figure A). Press down the tape to prevent the stain from seeping underneath.

    3. Use a razor blade to score a line in the floor (figure B).

    4. Use a sea sponge to apply water-based stain (figure C). Blot the sponge on a paper towel before applying to the floor.

    5. Add a second coat of stain for a richer color.

    6. You can do the same technique with a stencil (figure D). Dab paint onto a stencil, then remove it. You can create your own stencils using clip art on the computer.
