The Hale’s play room is really taking shape...so far, new custom-built shelves have been added in the closet along with a really cool raised play area for the kids. Attached to that is a desk for their computer. The room is really coming along, but there’s still a lot to do...like the floor!

    Materials:
    Utility knife
    Sharp blades
    24-inch carpenter's square
    Tape measure
    Chalk line

    Steps:

    1. Floor tiles (figure A) can be installed over most smooth dry and tight floors.

    2. Prepare floor to be covered by sweeping and cleaning.

    3. Select location of the first row of tiles. Using a chalk line, mark the floor to give a straight line across the center of the floor in both directions. The first row to be installed will need to be adhered to the ground using the sticky dots on the tiles.

    4. Once the first row is installed, checking the straightness as you go, install the rows on either side of the first row. Be sure that the tiles are fitting snuggly together (figure B).

    5. Begin cutting border tiles (figure C). Mark the first tile with your utility knife by notching the edge on the top and bottom. Flip tile over and cut between the marks with your carpet knife using the carpenter's square.

    6. To accommodate the door jamb or cased opening, make a marked cut. Cut tile at mark and slide into place. Make another mark at foot of baseboard.

    7. Peel film from adhesive dots and snug tile into place.

    8. Continue cutting border tiles by marking face up and cutting face down. Make several passes with your utility knife to complete the cut.
