    Window Seat Construction

With the hardwood floor in place, host Michael Ray Wisely and the Danfords put together a ready-to-assemble (RTA) bookcase -- following the manufacturer's instructions -- and construct a new window seat.

    1. Plan all cuts to get maximum usage of stock, then cut the pre-finished plywood to proper size. When cutting pre-finished wood, apply blue tape to seams to help prevent splintering (figure A).

    2. Add a curved edge along the base to add visual interest. To do this, use bender board (figure B) and brinks. Once the desired arc is achieved, clamp brinks to stock.

    3. Transfer curved line onto some blue tape. The blue tape will again prevent splintering. Use a jig saw to cut arc close to line. Sand to line using hand sander (figure C).

    4. To edge-band the edges of the pre-finished cherry, iron head-activated end-banding to the edge (figure D).

    5. Next, force the glue into the wood fiber using a piece of wood. Use double-sided edge trimmer to cut both sides of trim flush with stock.

    6. With all of the parts cut and banded, assemble the window seat. Attach bracing on the inside of the front and back panel. The bracing will provide extra support.

    7. Once all bracing is in place, assemble sides to back panel and secure each part with screws. Flip and apply felt pads to base, then set in top. Add pillows as desired.
