  • Floors and Tile: Kitchen and Stairs Flooring

    episode DHIQ-118

    Flooring the Kitchen

For the kitchen our homeowners (Brad and Lynn Oberg) had a difficult time trying to decide between tile or hardwood. With a Tuscan theme the wood would look romantic but with the whole design-theme in mind, the couple went with tile (figure A).

    Going "Hollywood" for the Staircase

On the staircase Brad and Lynn decided to go with a combination of hardwood and carpet. For the carpeting the couple went with a higher grade that cost more but would stand up to the high volume of traffic.

The installation itself utilized a concept called "Hollywood" (figure B), which means the carpet is installed over the contour of the steps instead of just going straight up and down and flat like a waterfall.

Note: Scotia moulding, which is a wood trim underneath the tread of the step where the tread and riser meet (figure C) was also utilized on the staircase steps.

Overall eclecticism was the theme of the Oberg home when it comes to floor coverings. "We don't feel that the whole house has to be the same style," Lynn said.

In the next episode of DIY's Home IQ learn more about the heating-and-cooling system of the Oberg home. The ductwork was fabricated in episode DHIQ-109 (Pt. I of our two-part heating-and-cooling episodes), but in our next installment it all gets tied together creating a super efficient heating-and-cooling system.
