  • Floors and Tile: Carpet Installation
  • From "Home IQ"
    episode DHIQ-118

    PHOTO

    Figure A
Tony Macioce, a carpet installer for Molyneaux Tile and Carpet, has been installing carpet for more than 30 years, and he kindly offered to share information about some of the tools of his trade:

    • Carpet Tack Strip (figure A) -- This is put down first about a 1/4" away from the baseboards. In front of it are pins (also seen in figure A) that hold the carpeting as it's stretched on. The wood strip is cut at a 45-degree angle so as the carpet is channeled in it stays down in place.

    • Staple guns, staples and padding knife (figure B) -- These are the tools used to put down the padding that goes underneath the carpet.

    • Row cutter (figure C) -- This rug-carpet cutting tool is used to cut a row of carpeting to create a seam. You simply slide this tool along the carpet to create the cut.

    • Tools for Joining Seams of Carpet -- These tools include Orcon seam tape (figure D), which has ribs of glue, seaming iron (which heats the ribs of glue on the seaming tape) and a porcupine cutter to get the glue up through into the back of the carpet. Then a weight is put on top to secure until the glue can set.

    • Power stretcher (figure E) -- This tool is vital for a "successful" carpet installation. As the carpet installer lifts the handle up and push down the rug is pushed down upon the tack strip -- and it keeps the rug from having any buckles or problems later on if this tool is used. Do this by hand and you could run into trouble.

    • The kicker (figure F) -- This is another stretching tool that is smaller and easier to use. It helps to ensure that the carpet is set onto the tack strip firmly. One end is padded so you can actually kick it with your knee.

    • Wall trimmer (figure G) -- This tool is used after all the carpeting is stretched to "trim" the excess carpet. It runs along side and channels the carpet enough to tack it into the strip properly.

    • Tack hammer (figure H) -- This is used for rubbing the carpeting once its kicked onto the tack-strip pins to make sure its totally secure and in place.

In the last segment the kitchen floor is tiled and the stairs go "Hollywood".
