    While the brick hearth is being constructed, Stephanie Huber and host Amy Devers work on getting the hardwood floor back into shape.

    Materials:

    vapor barrier
    staple bun
    hammer
    tongue-and-groove boards
    nail gun
    wood putty
    orbital sander
    wood stain
    advertisement


    1. Use pry bar to remove damaged pieces of flooring (figure A) and vacuum any debris left over from the removal process.

    2. Cut vapor barrier to size (figure B) and staple into place using a staple gun. Use hammer to flatten staples into place.

    3. Stagger and attach tongue and groove boards to fit tightly over the vapor barrier. Cut boards with a miter saw to fit perfectly. Allow a little room due to wood’s tendency to expand and contract and make sure to use the same kind of wood that already exists in the room.

    4. Face nail each board into place (figure C). After all boards are nailed, use wood putty to cover each nail.

    5. Sand boards with orbital sander (figure D) in preparation for stain.

    6. Stain wood using a rag and wood stain appropriate for type of wood used in flooring.
