  • Dean and Derek transform a fireplace with natural stone and a bluestone hearth. Check out more of Dean and Derek's Rock Solid home improvement projects.


    In this Rock Solid project, expert stone masons Derek Stearns and Dean Marsico give a stone facelift to a dated brick living room fireplace. Using Seabed natural thin stone — a light colored stone with fossils — they get rid of ugly bricks without having to remove them. Using a natural thin stone, they are able to cover the brick directly. They also add a bluestone hearth and refinish an old wooden mantel.

    Note: The quantities needed for each of these materials vary with application. For your specific project, Dean and Derek suggest taking the dimensions to a local dealer, where they will calculate the amount of each product needed.

    Safety Alert: When mixing concrete, make sure to wear a safety mask to protect your lungs and prevent breathing of concrete dust.
