Fireplace Project #2: Stripping and RepaintingThe second fireplace restoration takes place in the downstairs parlor. This fireplace surround has been painted, but the paint is now old and discolored, so it's in need of stripping and repainting. We also restore and recreate the decorative trim. The homeowners also have a mirror panel that they'd like to install above the mantel. Total project time for this restoration is about four to five hours. The majority of the stripping can be done in about an hour. It's the detail work that will take the time. Tools and materials: methylene-chloride based stripper (gel type preferred) 1 bag of course steel wool or 3m scrubbing pads for stripping 1 gal. lacquer thinner 1 gal. mineral spirits cotton rags old toothbrushes scrub brushes. steel paint buckets drop cloths, clear plastic sheets duct tape. 1 pair of chemical resistant rubber gloves breathing respirator
Stripping Old Paint- Begin by testing a small area with the gel stripper (figure A).
- If the stripper is effective on your paint, proceed by applying the stripper to the face of the mantel (figure B).
Allow the stripper to set for 15 to 20 minutes, then begin scraping off he stripper and dissolved paint (figures C and D).
Use the heavy course steel wool soaked in lacquer thinner to begin the rest of the removal of the paint (figures E and F).Once the majority of the paint has been removed, allow the wood surface to dry.Lightly sand and it is ready for priming of the new paint coats.
