Installing the Surround- Slip the surround over the two tabs on the top, and attach with screws at the base of the insert (figure A).
- Put the screen on over glass of the surround. It's not only a decorative element, but it protects anyone from touching the "hot" glass.
Installing the Oak Mantel ShelfNote: This is a custom mantel that the homeowners found online (see Resources, below, for information). - First, take off the old mantel carefully by using pry bars (figure B).
- If adhesive was used to secure the mantel, you'll need to use a reciprocating saw to pry it apart.
- Lift the old mantel off and scrap clean the old adhesive.
- Dryfit the new mantel shelf and check for level.
- The mantel attaches to the wall with angled ledger boards (figure C). To find the proper height for the ledgers, mark the finished height of the new mantle with a pencil, then measure down 2-3/4".
- Secure the ledger boards to studs in the wall.
- Lift the new mantel and place it on the ledger boards, and use a couple of pin nails to secure the mantel. The ledger boards will carry most of the weight.
