    Installing the Surround

    1. Slip the surround over the two tabs on the top, and attach with screws at the base of the insert (figure A).

    2. Put the screen on over glass of the surround. It's not only a decorative element, but it protects anyone from touching the "hot" glass.

    Installing the Oak Mantel Shelf

Note: This is a custom mantel that the homeowners found online (see Resources, below, for information).

    1. First, take off the old mantel carefully by using pry bars (figure B).

    2. If adhesive was used to secure the mantel, you'll need to use a reciprocating saw to pry it apart.

    3. Lift the old mantel off and scrap clean the old adhesive.

    4. Dryfit the new mantel shelf and check for level.

    5. The mantel attaches to the wall with angled ledger boards (figure C). To find the proper height for the ledgers, mark the finished height of the new mantle with a pencil, then measure down 2-3/4".

    6. Secure the ledger boards to studs in the wall.

    7. Lift the new mantel and place it on the ledger boards, and use a couple of pin nails to secure the mantel. The ledger boards will carry most of the weight.
