    Installing the Flexible Vent Pipe

    1. Remove the old chimney cap by unscrewing the screws.

    2. Measure the length of the flue from the top of the chimney (on top of the roof) to the firebox below.

    3. Set the flue flashing (figure A) on top of the chimney and trace the size to cut the flashing.

    4. Cut the flashing to size -- slightly larger than the mark to ensure a good seal.

Safety Alert: Be sure to wear protective gloves when cutting flashing!

    5. Apply a bead of high-temperature silicone around the top of the flue and set the flashing in place (figure B).

    Assembling the Vent Pipes

    1. Start from the bottom and go up. One pipe is a cold-air intake and the other is an exhaust.

    2. Attach a short section of stainless steel pipe to the exhaust side (figure C) by using three self taping screws.

    3. Stretch both expandable vent pipes to the proper length.

    4. Drop both flexible pipes down the flue (figure D) to the firebox, and know that this will be a two-person job.

    5. Screw the vent cap (figure E) onto the flashing on top of the chimney with self taping screws.

    6. Prepare for hooking up the gas and electrical lines, which should "perhaps" be done by a professional.

    7. Drill two holes from the firebox down into the basement through concrete, using a specialty bit.

    8. Pull the gas line and electrical up from the basement, and hardwire the blower motor for the fireplace.

In the next segment the insert will be installed.
