Grace-Anne and Erik Alfiero are definitely do-it-yourselfers. They purchased a home in need of a great deal of repair work three years ago. The two hit a wall when they encountered problems with the existing wood-burning fireplace and bookcase surround. The free-standing single-flue fireplace met 1970s safety codes, but isn't up to today's standards. In addition, the patina the Alfieros applied to the outer fireplace surface emits toxic fumes when the fireplace is in use. The bookshelves, placed so close to the free-standing fireplace, are a definite safety hazard, and one that Erik Alfiero had not considered when he built them.

The Alfieros' free-standing fireplace doesn't meet today's safety codes and is a hazard near the bookshelves.

Before the crew started working, the couple's room was cluttered and the window treatments lacked panache.

To rescue the Alfieros from imminent disaster, the DIY to the Rescue crew will:- Install a new electric fireplace and surround
- Finish and trim out the bookshelves
- Install custom window shutters
- Install a sliding barn door to add some privacy and contain the sounds of Erik's drums
