  • Mantle Installation
  • From "DIY to the Rescue"
    episode DTTR-210

Because the entire wall is brick, installing a mantle and shelves for electronic storage presents a challenge to the Rescue crew. Together, the team will teach Scott Hamstead how to install lead sleeves and lag bolts that will secure the "floating" mantle and shelving to the brick surface.

    Materials:

    Tape measure
    Hammer and drill
    Rotary cutter or angle grinder
    Lag bolts
    Masonry bits
    Wood bits
    Lead sleeves
    Mantle
    Construction adhesive
    Paste wax

    1. Establish height of mantle above the fireplace (most are about 12" above the firebox). Mark the grout line closest to the desired height. This mantle will extend about 10-1/2 feet horizontally, so the crew marks every 16". These marks indicate where the lead sleeves will be positioned.

    2. Next, drill holes where lead sleeves will be placed (figure A). Use a 3/4" masonry bit to a depth of about 3".
Tip: Use tape on the drill bit to indicate the correct drilling depth.

    3. Insert the lead sleeves into the holes (figure B). The sleeves are ridged and are designed to "grab" the masonry surface as they are compressed by the lag screws.

    4. Insert the 10" lag bolts (figure C) and tighten to secure. Once all bolts are secured in the lead sleeves, use an angle grinder to cut the heads from the lag bolts (figure D).

    5. Next, drill holes into the back surface of the mantle where it will join the brick wall. Make sure to measure and mark accurately so that the mantle holes will align perfectly with the lag bolts. Drill 1/2" holes across the back of the mantle.

    6. Lift the mantle into place onto the lag bolts (figure E).
