1. Measure the exact area of the hole to be patched, then cut a board to fit in the area where the patch will go.2. Nail the board to the studs behind the drywall. Transfer the exact measurement of the hole to drywall.
3. Score the drywall, break along the score lines, then finish the cut on the opposite surface.
4. Bevel the edges on the new piece of drywall and the existing hole (figure A). Dry fit the drywll into the hole.
5. Drill drywall screws into the drywall (figure B), just enough to dimple it. Position mesh tape over the seam and cover with joint compound.
6. Use joint compound to fill screw holes and all seams (figure C). Feather the compound a few inches beyond the tape edges.7. After the compound has dried, sand smooth (figure D), then apply a second coat of compound. After second coat has dried, sand the area one more time. Remove any residue, then paint as desired.
