Host Samantha Gleisten creates a unique chair with a place to store a guitar.
Materials:salon dryer chair fabric wood scraps 1x2 oak wood glue sandpaper stain polyurethane spray glue power drill chop saw circular saw band saw
1. Unscrew the hair dryer, arm rests, seat, and back rest from the chair.2. Remove the old fabric from the seat and back rest (figure A). Stretch new fabric over the cushions, and then staple in place along the backside. Reattach the seat back and bottom. 3. Cut sections of 1x2 blocking with a chop saw to run along the sides of the chair interior to support the new bottom and back panels. 4. Measure and cut a plywood panel for the bottom and back of the chair using a circular saw. 5. Pre-drill, wood glue and screw the blocking in place, and then attach the new back and bottom panels. 6. Mark a "C" shaped outline on stainable scrap wood which will fit behind the chair back and hold the two guitars in place. The piece should be the same overall width as the back of the chair--and about twice as deep.
7. Cut the guitar holder out using a band saw (figure B).8. Place the piece on top of the back of the chair with the opening facing outward. Mark the piece from the bottom to make cutouts to allow the guitar holder to slide into the back, mounting flush with the sides and top of the chair back. 9. Sand and stain the guitar holder, and then apply a polyurethane finish. Attach a strip of felt to the inside edge of the guitar holder so it will not scratch the guitars.
10. Cover the sides of the chair with new fabric (figure C), and then attach with a staple gun on the inside. Finish with some upholstery tacks on the front.11. Cover the inside of the chair back with faux fur (figure D), and then spray glue in place.
12. Attach the guitar holder by pre-drilling and screwing in through the sides of the chair back.Project Expense: Hair salon chair: Free Fabric: $32 Wood, materials: $20 Total: $52
