    Boxes

For this project, plywood boxes were custom built out of 3/4 inch birch plywood with clear pine used to cover exposed plywood edges. The dimensions were determined by the size of the windows.

    Windows

    1. Remove the glass. Break the glass with the window resting over a trash container large enough for all the glass to fall into.

Safety Note: Don’t break the glass into a trash bag that has to be handled to prevent injury.

    2. Remove all of the hardware.

    3. Strip the paint.

Note: Old windows may be painted with lead paint, so take precautions by wearing a dust mask and gloves.

    4. Fill all of the holes and imperfections in the windows to create a smooth surface for a smooth paint job.

    5. Reinforce the frames as needed with screws and metal brackets.

    6. Cut sections of Plexiglas and 1/4 inch plywood to fit into the window frames.

    7. Prime and paint the window frames.

    8. Stain 1/4 inch plywood.

    9. Once the paint is dry, install the Plexiglas and plywood (figure F).

    10. Attach the finished windows to the custom built boxes to create doors (figure G). Use the appropriate hinge hardware.

    11. Hang the remaining windows on the wall using picture hanging hardware.
