    1. Clean up and sand all of the scrap pieces of wood.

    2. Build a three-sided box to serve as a base that is 28" x 6" deep.

    3. Attach the box to the shelving (figure C).

    4. Create a "gate leg" system. Cut two pieces of scrap wood to 13 1/4" x 2 1/4". Level the legs, and then remove the existing bolts. Bolt the leg pieces to the bookcase (figure D) at the bottom shelf to create the "gate legs".

    5. Cut the door or desktop to 28 1/4" x 29".

    6. Cover the desktop with fabric using spray adhesive.

    7. Stain and polyurethane the fabric-covered desktop.

    8. Paint and decorate the bookcase shelving as desired.

    9. Hinge the desktop to the bookcase (figure E).

    10. Add door handles and latches on the side of the unit.

    Project Expense:

    Shelf, legs: Free
    Plywood: $15
    Paint: $10
