Surfboard Guitar RackThe crew designs a guitar rack out of a surfboard to store the homeowner's prized possession.
Materials:surfboard sweaters guitar stand scrap lumber table saw chop saw reciprocating saw sander drill and bits screws chisels knife sureform tool polyurethane glue scissors large sewing needle spray glue upholstery tacks
Guitar Stand1. Using a guitar as a template, customize your guitar stand to fit this application. 2. Bend the bottom bracket to more tightly hug the bottom of the guitar. Clamp the bracket to a table, or use a vice, and then bend the metal using pliers. 3. An additional bracket was created to hold the neck of the guitar in place and keep it from falling forward. 4. Solder two right angle brackets into the shape of a "W". 5. Wrap the bracket in yarn, and then finish with a 12-sided die for added interest. 6. Pre-drill the die, and then attach with a wood screw. Note: These elements were used to reference songs from a band who signed the guitar. 7. Using a reciprocating saw and a metal cutting blade, cut the tripod base off of the guitar stand.
Hanging Bracket1. Using scrap lumber, create a basic square frame that will fit the shape of the surfboard. Use glue and screws to attach the wood. 2. Use a table saw to cut a 45-degree angle bevel on the edges of four pieces. These pieces will become your "hanging system" (figure F). 3. Attach two of the 45-degree angle pieces to the wall. 4. Build the other two pieces into the framework. 5. All of the 45-degree angle pieces should meet together, and gravity will hold everything in place. 6. Attach the guitar stand to the wooden hanging bracket. 7. Find the center, and then place the guitar stand.
8. Dill holes in the guitar stand (figure G) for screws to attach into the wood.Note: Use cutting fluid when drilling into metal, and use safety glasses and gloves to prevent injury. 9. Screw the guitar stand into place.
Surfboard1. Remove the fins and any unnecessary details from the surfboard to create a more uniform surface. 2. Lightly sand the entire surfboard. 3. Mark the placement of the hanging bracket. 4. Cut and carve into the back of the surfboard (figure H) to allow the bracket to be inset inside. 5. Once the cavity has been carved into the back of the surfboard, affix the hanging bracket to the surfboard (figure I) with polyurethane glue. 6. Use clamps to hold it in place while the glue dries.
