Storage UnitA faux fireplace along with custom built shelving creates a "cozy" storage unit for the television and books.
Materials:thrift store fiberglass fireplace found rosewood cabinets 3/4" birch plywood 1"x3" clear pine stock screws wood glue finish nails wood filler red mahogany stain polyurethane table saw reciprocating saw drill and bits hammer nail set power sander
1. Cut out the back of the fireplace using a reciprocating saw and a fine tooth blade. Note: This was done to accommodate the size of the television.Safety Note: Wear a dust mask and safety glasses when working with fiberglass. You may also want to wear a long sleeve shirt and long pants.
2. Using spray paint and stain, touch up any nicks and dings in the fireplace. 3. Use 1" x 3" clear pine to trim the base of the fireplace (figure E). This will give the fireplace a more "built-in" look, and it will cover any slop from your cutting. 4. Stain and polyurethane the piece to match the other woodwork in the room.
Cabinet Prep1. Cut the cabinets down to the desired dimension. 2. Sand the finish off the face and doors of the cabinet. 3. Replace the existing glass with clear plexiglass. Tip: Since our cabinets were once built into a wall, there was framing that needed to be covered. This was done by ripping 1" x 3" clear pine stock to width using a table saw, and then boxing in all the edges of the cabinet. This will hide all of the undesirable framing.
