- Measure and mark four boards to a length of 51 inches and four more boards to 5 1/2 inches.
- Set your miter saw to a 45 degree angle, then cut both ends of all the boards.
- Using a three inch hole saw, cut out a hole in the center (figure A) of the two 51 inch boards. Sand, then polyurethane the exposed sides of each board.
- Assemble the box using finish nails.
- Feed the light fixture wires through the three inch hole, then attach the lamp to the board using mounting screws.
- Locate and mark the studs in your wall, then pre-drill corresponding holes in the lamp board. Position the board, then screw it to the wall (figure B).
- Make the electrical connections or have an electrician do the work for you.
- Put the bulb in the fixture.
- Add a bead of wood glue to each of the 45 degree ends.
- Then nail the two 5 1/2 inch pieces to the ends of the remaining two 51 inch boards. Hold that in place and nail it to the baseboard on the wall (figure C).
