The surround-sound system was mounted and connected in an earlier episode of DIY's Home Theater Workshop, but now it's time for host Corey Greenberg and engineer Mark Midyett to determine where to place the two subwoofers for the best bass and to calibrate all the speakers and program the remote control. Two subwoofers (figure A) are being used in the room to help achieve a more even bass response. "The last speaker I usually place is the subwoofer," Mark said. "And its location is the most critical of all the speakers in the room." In previous episodes you found out that the best location for the subwoofers is the thirds and fifths (figure B). Each subwoofer will be in a slightly different location relative in the room to help smooth out the bass response.
Note: You "may" want to listen to the subwoofers in several different locations to find the best sounding position.Homeowner Peter Moore decided to place his subwoofers in a cabinet, which must be filled with insulation in order to enhance the acoustical qualities. Expert Trick: Use mineral wool (figure C) to stuff speaker cabinets. It's denser and less expensive than batt insulation.
