  • Curtis Leskanic's Home Theater
  • Tour the pro baseball player's unique home theater.
    From "Home Theater"
    episode DHTW-103

Many people want a room that offers more than just a place to watch movies or listen to music. Curstis Leskankic, a pitcher for the 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox, had a personal vision for his home theater. He and his wife Susan wanted a multi-purpose room with a dedicated home theater (figure A), billiards table and bar area.

The couple also wanted to decorate their room with keepsakes Curtis had earned from playing major league baseball. "I wanted it to be Curtis's room and we wanted it to be this sports theme," Susan said. "And it's funny because everybody that walks in says, 'This is a man's room. I could just live in this room.'"

But creating this unique home theater would not be an easy task. The room was literally the size of a warehouse, which posed its own set of problems. In fact, it was originally an acoustic nightmare. The ceilings alone were 18' high, and the entire room was built out of concrete blocks.

    Creating the Perfect Home Theater

    • First, the designers decided to lower the ceiling, and they created different levels in the ceiling (figure B) to create some acoustical value by allowing the sound to bounce around in the different levels.

    • With the acoustics under control, Leskanic's design team created a multi-purpose room the entire family could enjoy. The home-theater area is toward the front of the room where there are darker fabrics and finishes (figure C).

    • There's tiered seating for the dedicated home theater, and once you get into the room about a third of the way, the room transitions into more of a game room with a lighter color scheme and lights on individual dimmers (figure D). This way there can be light in the bar area without drastically affecting the picture quality on the big screen.
