  • Upgrading a Family Room: Prep Work and Organization
  • From "Weekend Remodeling"
    episode WKR-104

On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the hardest, this project is a 3.

Part 1 took 18 hours over a period of two and a half days.

Prep and paint the old paneling = 4 hours
Remove spindle, etc. = 5 hours
Install corner cabinet = 4 hours
Install new mantel and fireplace door = 5 hours

We spent approximately $2,000 on supplies. If you were to hire a contractor to do this job, you would probably spend around $3,500. (Instructions continued below)

    1. The first part of any project is to determine the layout. Sketching out the design will help you determine what you want to do and what you actually can do. There are computer programs available that will create a 3-D image of the space.

    2. Gather all your tools for the project. This saves a lot of time and prevents having to stop and run to the hardware store.

    3. Prime and paint your new cabinets the same color as your walls (figure A).

    4. Place the cabinets where they will be installed and make a cardboard template (figure B) of the countertop. Take the template to a local carpenter to have your wooden countertop made before you begin the project.
