  • Playroom Closet
  • From "DIY to the Rescue"
    episode DTTR-411F

Richard and Kelly Hale could use a little help with their home improvement projects. They have already fixed up most of the house, but their kids' playroom is creating unwanted sibling rivalry. The Hales have a 4-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son...all her clothes are getting mixed in with his and his toys are taking over the room. The DIY to the Rescue crew is going to make the playroom a fun, organized space for the Hale children to grow in to.

    Trim Out Closet

    Materials:
    Utility knife
    Wide putty knife
    Carpenter's pencil
    Safety goggles
    Reciprocating saw
    Level
    Circular Saw
    Nail gun and compressor
    Shims

    Steps:

The raw opening of the room's closet must be addressed (figure A). New casing and trim are needed to finish the closet off.

    1. To prepare the room for the project, remove everything.

    2. Take measurements of closet opening so you can cut the wood needed (figure B). To make the door jamb, cut down 1' x 6' wood pieces to the necessary width.

    3. Cut wood to length to finish off the inside of opening. Cut wood, and align with header, top piece of wood of frame (figure C). Make sure that it sits flush with the dry wall.

    4. With a nail gun and two-inch nails, nail the header in to place. Stagger the nails every six to eight inches along the length (figure D).

    5. Install side pieces (figure E). Again, line up edge of board with dry wall so that it is flush. Nail in.

    6. Take measurements for casing, decorative molding that goes all the way around. Go to miter saw, cut casing to length at 45-degree angles so corners fit nicely together.

    7. Install casing leaving eighth inch reveal (figure F). Use nail gun to fasten in to place.
