Creating a Sense of Independence From "DIY to the Rescue" episode DTTR-410F

Justin's favorite room gets a new look in this episode of DIY to the Rescue.

Ron Bird wants son Justin to have a space of his own. Justin, who is 24 years old and has special needs, also needs a sense of independence. The two need help in transforming a bonus room into an apartment, and that's where DIY to the Rescue will lend a hand.

The Rescue crew is ready to help create a functional space for Justin by installing a new door with sidelights, a custom entertainment center and a small kitchenette.

Door Installation:

1. Unpack the door unit and pull the two halves of the door jamb apart. Set the half with door attached into the rough door opening. Level and plumb the door unit, then nail through the casing (figure A) to attach (use a nail gun with 2-1/2" nails).

2. Place one shim at each hinge and two or three on the opposite side. Nail through jamb and shim, making sure to nail closer to the door side of the jamb.

3. Slide in second half of jamb and nail through casing in the wall.

4. Paint the door and trim and add doorknob.
