Here, learn the DIY Basics to choosing the best front door for your home with home-improvement expert James Young.
1. Steel doors: These are the most common and least expensive (figure A). A common misconception is that these doors are steel through and through. They have a foam core, which means they are energy efficient. Steel doors come primed and ready to paint. They do not swell or shrink, which is a good thing. Be warned, these doors are very easy to dent. 2. Fiber glass doors: Fiber glass doors are a step up in price and appearance (figure B). They come with a wood grain look and are strong, energy efficient and will not dent. You can purchase these ready to paint. Fiber glass doors are pretty much maintenance free and a good option if you have lots of traffic in and out of your house. 3. Wood doors: These are pricy, heavy and very sturdy (figure C). Wood doors will shrink and swell with weather. There will be fading from sun over time, which will require sanding and re-staining. These are the most beautiful, but require the most maintenance.
