Archway: Installing the Easy-Arch From "Weekend Handyman" episode WKH-309

Installing the Pre-Formed Arch

1. The arches come in a set size. A piece a plywood or a 2 x 4 may need to be added to adjust the size of the opening.

2. Measure the width and rise of the arch and transfer that measurement to the side walls.

3. Slide the arch to the top of the doorway (figure A), lining the legs up with the marks on the sides. Nail it to the doorframe.

4. The easiest way to install a pre-formed arch is to set one side to the right height, then slide the other end into place.

5. To give the arch more strength, screw 2 x 4 blocks into the corners (figure B).

6. Because of the old plaster 3/4" have to be made up with drywall. Start with a 1/4" layer and on top of that lay a sheet of 1/2" drywall.

7. Then use a rotary cutting tool to trim the drywall along the underside of the arch.

8. Cover the underside of the arch with drywall. Working slowly and using two pieces will make it less likely to break. To go through the metal form, use self-taping screws.

9. Use a rasp (figure C) to finish the edges of the arch.

10. Spray adhesive and apply a flexible corner bead that follows the arch radius.

11. All that's left is for the walls to be patched and the paint to be retouched.
