Exterior doors come in a wide range of choices. For this particular project the homeowners chose a three-panel door that matches the rest of the house.
Host Fuad Reveiz finishes the project by installing the interior trim, caulking any imperfections and nail holes, adding some quarter round to match the rest of the room and painting.

This is an intermediate level project and rated 4 on a "difficulty" scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the most difficult.

    Materials:

    pre-hung 3-panel door
    bricks
    mortar
    shims
    miscellaneous lumber (including OSB plywood)
    nails
    screws
    trim
    caulk
    paint

The new door definitely adds to the beauty and value of the home!

    1. Now that the door has been installed it's time to come inside to trim it out. First, install the hardware for the door (figure A). Slip the lock assembly into both sides of the door, and then secure them together with the provided screws.

    2. After checking the deadbolt, insert the handles and tighten them down with an wrench.

    3. Now that you have easy access to the porch, set up the chop saw to trim out around the door. Measure and cut the trim for the sides, and install it by using a brad nailer on the thin part of the wood (figure B). Use a nail gun with 2" finish nails in the thicker side.

    4. Measure for the top board, cut it on the saw and install it over the door (figure C).

    5. The baseboard goes on next. Remember to recycle the piece that was removed earlier.

    6. Add quarter round to match the rest of the room. A little lightweight spackle fills in the areas that the trim doesn't cover completely along with the nail holes.

    7. Caulk where the trim meets the wall, and then after a light sanding give everything a good coat of paint.

    8. Finally, add a bead of clear silicone caulk between the new brick and the brick mold around the door (figure D).

Note: The size of your project could change the time in which (a weekend for this particular project) you can complete it.
