  • Pediment, Pilasters and New Stoop Surface
  • The rescue crew tackles the architectural elements of the project.
    From "DIY to the Rescue"
    episode DTTR-107

    (Continued from page 1)

    3. Holes are drilled at the marks (in the masonry, not the brick) and a countersink bit is used to ensure that the pilasters are flush with the surface before being secured with masonry screws (figure C).

    4. Construction adhesive is applied to the back surface of the pediment before the pediment is secured into place (figure D).

    5. Caulk is applied around each piece to ensure a waterproof seal. Screws and nails are also covered.

With the pediment and pilasters in place, Ravenna, his girlfriend Luna Kang, and the Rescue crew decide to tear down the old rails before a professional contractor applies new surface material to the stoop.

    6. They begin by demolishing the old rails with a chainsaw (figure E).

    7. The professional contractor builds wooden forms around the stoop (figure F), then trowels the new surface material (figure G) over the old concrete surface that Ravenna had applied.

    8. While the new surface dries, the crew adds new plants and landscaping (figure H).
