This bird's-eye view of Dudley's fireplace waterfall shows you just how unique an idea it was to add a water to a fireplace!

When DIYer Dudley Voll was rebuilding his fireplace, he wanted to do something a bit different. His clever solution -- just add water.

"Everybody who comes here says, 'Look, oh my, a waterfall." Dudley says, talking about his unique and beautiful new fireplace (photo, right). When he decided to expand his home and add a second story, the roofline had to move, of course, and he thought why not put gemstones (figure A) where the old roofline was.

It took four or five days, a little at a time, to get all the gemstones and waterfall into place. In among all the stones are two special ones, one with that says "love" and one that says "peace."

By accident, another cluster of stones resembles an angel, and when Dudley's daughter noticed, his wife arranged them to duplicate a perfect gemstone angel.

Use Dudley's project as an example if you're considering a remodel job for your fireplace or mantel. Step outside the box and create something unique and pleasing to the eye -- and definitely a conversation starter.
