  • Keeping Soap Scum at Bay
  • From "DIY Weekend"
    episode DIYW-217

Glass shower doors are great, but over time, they tend to accumulate a film from soap scum and hard water, which is really hard to clean off. But Amy Matthews, host of Bathroom Renovations, has some tricks that can make this grungy job a lot easier.

    • If the build-up of soap scum is heavy, try scraping it off with a wallpaper scraper. Put a new blade in the scraper, and then carefully scrape the deposits off the glass. Rinse the blade frequently as you work.

    • Go after the scum with very fine steel wool, which you can buy at a hardware store. To increase the steel wool's effectiveness, dip it in liquid dishwasher detergent. Follow up by rinsing the glass thoroughly.

    • A surprise option for scrubbing off scum: a dryer fabric-softener sheet! Wet the sheet slightly before using it. Again, be sure to rinse the surface well.

    • After all that work getting rid of the soap scum, you'll probably want to prevent it from building up again. A thin coat of car wax can help. Apply the wax to the glass with a damp sponge and let it dry to a haze. Buff it off with a dry cloth. If you wax the glass about three times a year, you should see a noticeable difference in how clean it stays.

    • Another easy way to prevent soap scum is to dry the shower door as soon as you're done showering. Keep a squeegee in the shower, and use it to remove the water from the door.

If you keep up with this simple routine, you should be able to say "so long" to soap scum for good.
