If you have allergies, you already know that your home can be a breeding ground for allergens. There are several measures you can take to lessen your exposure to them, though: - Change the filters in your home every month.
- Use HEPA filters -- they trap the most dust.
- Try using disposable vent covers to trap dust in your heating vents.
- Vacuum twice weekly.
- For people with severe allergies, a vacuum cleaner with an allergen filter is a good investment.
- Dust frequently -- but don't use a feather duster: it will stir up too much dust.
- Make sure all your windows and doors fit tightly. If they don't, apply caulking and weatherstripping as needed.
- If mold is a problem, use a dehumidifier.
- Remove your shoes as soon as you walk in the door. You can track in a lot of dust and mold -- even insecticides -- on your feet.
