As part of a master-bedroom upgrade, a storage strategy gets reworked and improved with a closet update and addition of built-in shelves and cabinets.

Following is a summary of the basic steps and tips as seen in this project, as well as a list of tools and materials used.

Steps:

• Slide cabinets into place (figure A) and check to be sure they are level and plumb.

• Pre-drill holes through the sides and attach the cabinets with screws.

• The installation of the made-to-order fireplace surround is fast and easy. Simply secure the wooden fireplace-surround pieces to the wall with screws (figure B).

• For the window nook, screw the window bench frame to the back wall.

• Attach the decorative front panel with wood glue and finish nails.

	Reconfigured storage helps to streamline the room's space.
	The closet gets updated to blend better with the room's new look and feel.

Tips:

• Custom cabinets are an excellent use of space and they have perceived value for potential buyers.

• When you're purchasing custom cabinetry, be sure you'll be able to fit the inidividual pieces through doorways and up stairways for installation.

• If you're putting a lot of money into custom cabinetry, you'll want to be sure to finish it properly. A professional painter may bring the kind of finish that a custom piece deserves.
