Open Door VanityOak doors, plywood and an exhaust hood are cleverly put together to create a beautiful vanity.
Materials:2 oak doors mirror fireplace exhaust hood 3/4" oak plywood polyurethane sandpaper steel wool brass cleaner screws glue wood fill stain staining supplies electrical supplies high gloss polyurethane nails tape measure squares bevel gauge marking tools sander table saw chop saw circular saw straight edge saw guide drill wood spatula
Oak Doors1. Sand the doors to remove any scratches. 2. On the table saw, rip 22.5-degree bevels on the front and back sides of the doors (figure F) . 3. Fill any holes and imperfections in the doors and repair as needed. 4. Stain the door using a dark stain. 5. Apply two or three coats of polyurethane. Mirror 1. Sand the frame around the mirror. 2. Stain, and then apply polyurethane. Fireplace Hood 1. Clean and polish the brass using steel wool and a brass cleaner. 2. Finish the hood with a coat of high gloss clear polyurethane to protect the shine. 3. Build a box out of 3/4 inch oak plywood to mount behind the doors. This will hold the vanity light strip and will also attach to the oak doors.
4. Stain the box.5. Attach the hood and light strip to the plywood box (figure G). Custom Shelves Tip: Make a scale drawing of your project to help determine the dimensions of the shelves. 1. Make the shelves from 3/4 inch oak plywood. 2. Use 1" x 1" solid oak stock as nosing to cover the exposed plywood edges. Use nails and glue to attach. Note: The width of the shelves should match the width of the mirror. 5. Use scrap plywood to create bracket shelves which will be used to screw the shelves to the doors. 6. Stain and polyurethane the shelves to match the other wood. Assembly Note: Assemble the project in the room that it will be located. 7. Attach the shelves to the doors using screws through the plywood shelf brackets. 8. Attach the mirror to the top shelf through the shelf and through the sides of the doors.
9. Install the hood to the top of the mirror using screws (figure H).10. Run the wiring for the lights through a dimmer switch on the wall. 10. Hang a curtain from a curtain rod below the top shelf with curtain rings and a large dowel used for a rod.
