    (Continued from page 2)

    Canopy

    1. For the canopy, start with a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood cut to 81 inches in length.

    2. Create two "aprons". One apron will be below the canopy to conceal the drapery hardware, and one above to conceal the wiring and create a finished look.

    Top Apron

    1. Cut two 1 x 4 poplar boards to 78 inches in length, and one to 45 inches.

    2. Measure in 3/4 inch from the edge on the long sides, and 1 1/2 inch on the short side. Attach the boards to the top of the plywood by nailing through the underside (figure B), using wood glue and two inch brad nails with a pneumatic nail gun or hammer and nails.

Note: The top apron will conceal the wiring for the lights.

    Paint

    1. Prop the plywood canopy up on old paint cans or sturdy boxes so that the 1 x 6's of the bottom frame are facing upward.

    2. Paint all of the surfaces the color of your choice. There's no need to paint the interior surface of the top apron—this will face the ceiling.

    3. Paint two to three coats until evenly covered. Allow to dry before continuing.

    Wiring for Flush Mount Lights

Note: Add lights to the top apron before installing the canopy.

    1. Mark places for the four low-voltage xenon lighting evenly spaced on the canopy ceiling. Make sure the lighting will not interfere with the ceiling hooks.

    2. Drill and place the lights, pulling wiring through the top of the canopy and concealing it behind the curtains that will hang from the canopy (figure C) (figure D).

    Installation of the Canopy

    Materials:

4 160 lb. hook and eye systems

    1. Drill into the studs and secure the "hooks", spacing them evenly for each corner of the canopy.

    2. Secure eyelets into the corresponding places on the canopy topper (figure E).

    3. Raise the canopy, and then attach the hooks and eyes (figure F). The canopy will weigh approximately 150 pounds, so you will need to have three or four people to help with this step.
