    Bed Canopy

A canopy is designed, offering a touch of elegance to the bed.

    1. Cut three pieces of wood. Two pieces of 1 x 6 poplar cut to 77 inches in length, and one 1 x 6 poplar cut to 43 inches in length.

    2. Measure 2 1/2 inches from the edge of the plywood on the long sides, and then attach the two 77 inch long 1 x 6 boards to the underside of the plywood—on the long sides—using wood glue and two inch wire brad nails with a pneumatic nail gun or hammer and nails.

    3. Measure in three inches from the "short" edge, and then attach the 43 inch long 1 x 6 using the same method. This will form a frame to disguise the canopy curtain rods and hardware. After attaching these boards, the plywood should form an outer "lip" of 2 1/2 inches on the sides and approximately three inches in the front.

    1. Determine the position for the bed, and then the canopy in relation to the bed. The canopy will be larger than the bed, so measure an extra six inches on either side of the bed, and then make a mark. In this project, the bed is a standard twin size of 41" x 72", making the total 54 inches.

    2. Using a level, make a line through your pencil marks, making a vertical line up to 93 inches on the wall on both sides of the bed for the canopy width. Tape off with painter's blue tape, and then paint inside the line using the color of your choice. The color you choose will also be the color for the canopy topper.

    3. Using a stud finder, locate the studs above the bed, and then install hooks. You will need four #2 160 pound test hooks--spaced evenly above the bed into the studs in the ceiling.

Note: If you can't drill into the studs above the bed, you will be unable to use this canopy method.

    4. Make note of exactly where each hook was drilled into the ceiling so you can drill on the canopy top in the exact spots to align the hooks and eyes.
