    Easy Green SW6450
    Harvester SW6373
    Leather Bound SW6118
    Arresting Auburn SW6034
    Tricorn Black SW6258

    Materials:

    Asian icon stencils
    spackling compound
    2 24"x48" pre-primed stretched canvases

    1. Using a spackling spatula and lightweight spackling compound, apply thin overlapping coats directly onto both canvases.

    2. Allow the spackling to dry, and then lightly sand the peaks with 220-grit sandpaper.

    3. Using painter's blue tape (figure B), create four large rectangular sections by laying out a four inch stripe. Start by taping a line six inches from the bottom.

    4. Place another piece of tape parallel to and four inches above the first.

    5. Paint between the lines using "Arresting Auburn" and "Tricorn Black".

    6. Once the paint has dried, place a third piece of tape, from top to bottom--seven inches from the edge of the canvas.

    Figure D
    7. Place a fourth piece of tape parallel to the one before--top to bottom--four inches away. This will leave a side of 13 inches on a 24 inch canvas. Paint the stripe with the same colors as the first. Paint the horizontal stripe on the other canvas so that the two canvases can be placed side-by-side as one piece of art.

    8. Fill in the squares using the various paints. Use two tones of each room color, the light first, followed by the darker dry brushed on the canvas. On the seven inch rectangles, above and below the ribbon, use "Basil" and "Easy Green". For the thirteen inch portion, use "Harvester" and "Leather Bound" (figure C). Blend the darker color while the first coat is still wet to give a mottled look.

    9. For an accent, paint a long stem on each of the canvases with a deep green color. Using a fan brush, add fan shaped petals using the "Arresting Auburn" color. Paint additional orchid-like flowers on the stems.

    10. Using "Tricorn Black", add an Asian stencil from a craft store to the upper left corner of the left picture, and one to the lower right corner of the right picture (figure D).

    Oak Plywood Backdrops

Two large pieces of plywood are sanded and stained.

    Materials:

2 4"x8 3/4" pieces of oak or birch plywood
    wood stain

    1. Cut two pieces of oak or birch plywood two inches larger than the dimensions of the window on all sides.

    2. After sanding with a 220-grit sandpaper, stain the panels.
